I teach robots and other machines how to perceive their environment
Perceiving their environment is easy for humans. However, it turns out to be a difficult task for machines and robots. They perceive visual data as photos using digital cameras but the data encodes only colours. In order to enable a machine or a robot to understand that an image shows a tree or a person, a lot of work has to be done. We teach the machine or robot to learn by themselves from many example images. In this way the machine understands images better and better over time.
Our current project aims to recognize people from Kinect data. We generate face models and find characteristics for every person:
My Typical Day
I get up at 8, do research in Lero, teach students in the University of Limerick and meet friends in the evening.
Every weekday, I go to Lero and work on the people recognition project. The day starts of course with a cup of coffee. In order to get new ideas and to find problems with current approaches, I talk to my colleagues a lot.
Apart from the project, PhD Students have to do teaching. In my case, I do Tutorials at the University of Limerick which is a nice variation of my daily work.
Once in a while, we have special events like the Lero Launch where we present our work to the public and sometimes to politicians such as the Irish Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan.
These photos were taken at the Lero Launch with the minister:
