Technical lead/Web Developer
Mobile Travel Technologies (MTT)
I’m technical lead for a team making a travel website for people who travel with their job
Researching the best technologies to use to make our travel site faster, easier to work on, and looking awesome.
Writing code to create new features on the site (sometimes while sitting on bean bags listening to my favourite music in the company “Quiet Room”.
Attending meetings with the customer and providing updates on how the development of the site is progressing and discuss options for the next features we will be working on.
Helping a team of designers, developers, testers and business analysts work well together.
Sometimes I get to go to cool places for customer meetings like San Francisco or big conferences like AngularConnect in London
My Typical Day
A few meetings, answering questions from the team and writing some code!
Every morning starts with a really quick team meeting called a “Standup” meeting. Everyone on the team takes turns to say “What I did yesterday”, “What I will do today” and “Is anything blocking me from completing my work”. Then we discuss any other important issues on the team. It usually only takes 10 minutes.
Next, I often have a meeting with the entire team to discuss what work we will be working on in the next week or two. The designers show us what they have designed for each feature, we discuss how we think we will solve it and any problems we might have developing it.
Once back at my desk I will be helping answer questions from the others on the team and checking the progress of the teams work. I’ll then work on fixing some bugs or creating a new feature. To do that I use a code editor (its like Microsoft Word but designed for writing programming code ). I test how the website looks after I change the code and I write some tests to make sure the code will keep working like its supposed to. Once everything works well I “commit” my code after a code review with one of the developers on my team. Then I let the tester know its ready for them to test (A testers job is to try and find ways to break your code and make unexpected things happen!!)

What I'd do with the money
Donate to Coderdojo Coolest Projects Awards so more kids can take part and come to the awards for free to see awesome IT projects
CoderDojo is a coding club for kids aged 7 to 17. It is free to attend and run by volunteers. CoderDojo has lots of clubs all over Ireland and the entire World (although we are very proud as it was started in Cork by a teenager!).
The CoderDojo Coolest Projects Awards is a big competition for 1000 kids to take part in who have been creating their own Apps, websites, robots and other technology projects. All kids take part for free and all kids can go see the projects for free with their parents. There are really cool demos of new software like Microsoft XBox games, cool new Apps and flying Quadcopters.
I’m one of the volunteer organisers of this event and we have to raise a lot of money from Sponsors to run the entire event for free in the RDS in Dublin. €500 could pay for tshirts for the kids to wear or the lanyards around their neck that say what project they created or pay for some of the security we need to run the event safely!
