That depends on the complexity of the problem that you want to solve. In general planning is a good thing as it shows problems before they occur. Especially in a big team planning is essential.

Hmm good question! We like to plan things in stages… We meet as team at the start of a project and break down what we need to plan into big tasks.. like categories. Then we take the first category and break it down more. Designers will work on it and then the team will decide what are all the small tasks to get that bigger category finished. Then we start work before all the other categories are completely planned.

So every week we have some meetings planning what we will work on in a few weeks time. It’s better to plan as you go along as some requirements may change as you learn more.

It depends on the project. How long does it takes for you to write an essay or a poem? It is very dependent on the type of task you are asked to do. For example, a good model might required years (this is why PhD student works years on a topic) or just a few months (undergraduate projects).

It all depends on what you are doing. I don’t really like to make very detailed plans. If I have a project to do I will give it a plan on a whiteboard but then jump into the making of it.
I am a big fun of rapid prototyping. Just get busy with the making and you will figure things out as you go. Its ok to fail at something as long as you fail early and keep moving.
